Conference Aim and Scope:
What
is reason? What is rationality? For thousands of years, eastern and western
philosophers have devoted themselves to finding the answers, including Aristotle,
Plato, Confucius, Mencius, Kant, and Descartes. Their insights reflect a variety
of conceptual, ontological and methodological viewpoints. However, when ancient
wisdom meets cutting-edge research in cognitive science, is it undermined,
intact, or, rather, does it contribute to modern research in logic,
neuroscience, psychology and artificial intelligence? The purpose of this conference
is to start an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural conversation in which scholars
will investigate the nature of reason and of rationality. This conference will explore
a broad range of descriptive and normative studies of reason and rationality, including
the following:
- Psychology of reasoning
- The role of emotion in reason and rationality
- Instrumental and practical rationality
- Deductive, inductive, and abductive logic
- Prediction, explanation, and theoretical reasoning
- Practical reasoning and individual decision making
- Game theory and collective decision making
- Public Reason and moral rules
- Reasons for Action/ Rationality in Action
- Automated reasoning and artificial intelligence
- The comparison between human and nonhuman primates
- Reason/rationality analysis in Asian traditions
